First Year For Real

About Us

Make the next part a little easier.

If you are reading this at 3:00 a.m. while bouncing a newborn in the dark, or if you are 38 weeks pregnant and suddenly panicking about how little you actually know about taking a baby home—you are in exactly the right place.

Welcome to The First Year, For Real.

This site was created for parents who are tired of the perfection pressure. You don’t need another rigid schedule that falls apart by Tuesday, and you don’t need advice that makes you feel like you are already failing. You need clear explanations, realistic options, and one manageable next step.

Meet Molly Whitmore

A professionally trained postpartum-support friend who remembers exactly how difficult 3 a.m. can feel.

Hi, I’m Molly. I am a 35-year-old postpartum and newborn support consultant based in Des Moines, Iowa.

My professional background started in the trenches of postpartum support. I previously worked as a postpartum-support program coordinator and with a newborn-family services program. In those roles, I helped families prepare for life at home, organize feeding and sleep logistics, set up their households, and find practical support during those blurry early weeks. I am trained in non-clinical newborn and family support, which means I focus on the practical, everyday realities of caring for a baby and a recovering parent—not on diagnosing or treating medical conditions.

But my most honest education has come from my own life. I am married and raising two children: a three-year-old and a new baby. My advice comes from both my professional training and the imperfect, messy reality of my own living room.

I don’t present my home as perfectly organized, and I don’t pretend that I always have it together. I know what it feels like to have ordinary, difficult days. Every evening, I keep a running note on my phone called “Make Tomorrow Easier,” where I record one thing the baby did, one difficult moment, and one small preparation that might help us the next day. That is the spirit of this site.

Why "For Real"?

The first year of parenthood is a massive transition. It is beautiful, but it is also exhausting, lonely, and filled with conflicting advice from the internet.

I created The First Year, For Real because I believe parents need less pressure and more practical support. Here, you won't find shame for choosing formula, breastfeeding, pumping, or combination feeding. You won't find me treating one birth experience as the standard. I don't use fear to get clicks, and I will never promise that one sleep method works for every single baby.

Instead, I promise to:

  • Lead with empathy, then move quickly to useful guidance.

  • Explain the reason behind a recommendation.

  • Acknowledge that feeding and sleep differ across every family.

  • Give you permission to choose the practical solution that works for your family.

  • Clearly distinguish between normal variation, a question for your provider, and a potential urgent concern.

What You’ll Find Here

To make the next part of your journey a little easier, the site is organized into five core categories:

Newborn Life at Home

Practical first-weeks guidance covering newborn care, diapering, soothing, basic routines, and the transition from the hospital to home. We also cover how to handle visitors and household preparation so you can protect your rest.

Feeding Without the Pressure

Realistic support for breastfeeding, pumping, formula feeding, and combination feeding. We talk about bottle preparation, hunger cues, feeding logistics, and the exact questions you should ask your lactation consultant or pediatrician.

Sleep, Rest, and the 3 A.M. Hours

Honest conversations about newborn sleep expectations, night feeding, parental rest, and sleep deprivation. We focus on safe-sleep principles and how partners can share overnight care more fairly.

The Parent Reset

Because you matter, too. This category focuses on postpartum recovery, parental identity, emotional adjustment, relationships, and realistic self-care. It is about surviving the fourth trimester without losing yourself.

First-Year Family Systems

As your baby grows, your family systems need to adapt. We cover flexible routines, baby products you actually use, household organization, childcare planning, and returning to work.

A Note on Medical Advice

I am a postpartum and newborn support consultant. I am not a doctor, nurse, or therapist.

The information on this site is designed to provide general educational information and practical guidance. It does not replace advice from a qualified healthcare professional. Please always contact your healthcare provider or your baby’s pediatrician with questions about your specific situation, and seek urgent help for severe, sudden, or worsening symptoms.

You do not have to solve the whole first year today.

Start with the smallest useful step. Browse the latest posts, take a deep breath, and remember: different families need different workable answers. We are here to help you find yours.
